Quake 4 Multiplayer Tips and Tricks

General Gameplay Tips

Always keep moving. The second you stop makes you an easy target. Become adept at aiming while moving and no one can stop you!

Try to predict what your opponents next move is going to be and aim there. This is especially useful if you have the rocket launcher because of the missile's travel time.

Spam rockets and grenades in doorways, or where ever you think the enemy is going to pop up. If you have the ammo to spare, you may has well get in the habit of this because you could end up with an easy kill.

Try to be unpredictable in movement. Since most people will be trying to predict where you land if you're strafe jumping everywhere be unpredictable to make yourself a harder target.

Be aware of the sounds you make and the sounds other players make. You can discern where people are with sounds along with what weapons they are using. Heck, you can even psych them out by making them think you're doing something else like running away when you really aren't.

Know when to use the right weapon for the right situation. There is no such thing as the best' weapon although the rocket launcher, in my opinion, comes close.

Bind your weapons to keys instead of using the mouse wheel. This is just smart because you can instantly select the weapon you need as opposed to scrolling through all of them and getting killed in the process.

Know the armor and power-ups locations and constantly keep pressure on them. You get the bonus while denying your enemy the advantage. A lot of frantic battles will probably happen near the power-up locations.

Know when to attack, and when not to. Pretty straight forward advice. You don't go charging in to attack with no health with a machine gun against a guy who just snagged the armor and has a rocket launcher.

Learn the maps. If you have intimate knowledge of the battlefield you have the advantage, and knowing is half the battle.

Practice. Simple, simple advice. There's no way to get better than just practicing with a game like this. You will soon start naturally reacting to things you encounter multiple times as opposed to trying to make yourself react decreasing your response time.

Movement and Trick Jump Tips

Strafe Jumping

Strafe jumping is a very important skill in Quake 4 that enables you to move at a faster-than-running pace. When you strafe jump you perform a continuous jumping cycle while running forward and strafing in alternate directions (or the same direction if you want to curve your jump).

How it's done in a few easy steps: Step 1: Run forward. At no time in this example do you let go of the run forward key. While running, his the jump button. When you're in the air, release the jump button and press and hold it again. Basically once you master this, you'll be in a state of continuous jumping.

Step 2: Perform the technique as above EXCEPT when you jump in the air the first time, press and hold strafe left IN ADDITION to what you do already (holding forward and jump-cycling) After you land and skip back into the air, switch from holding strafe LEFT, to holding strafe RIGHT After you land and skip back into the air, switch from holding strafe RIGHT, to holding strafe LEFT for as long as you want to travel.

Once you get the hang of going forward you can also do it while going backwards. All you do is switch from holding forward all the time to holding backwards during this whole process.

This is what Strafe Jumping looks like when done right. May want to turn down the music unless you're interested in some techno beats.

Words of Caution: Jumping all over the place leave you an easy target for the guy holding the rail gun because your ability to change direction is pretty much nil.

Ramp Jumping

Ramp jumping is all about jumping up an incline, or a slope to get more height on your jump than normally possible.

To do this, start a strafe jump into a ramp. Try to hit the highest part of the ramp as you can to gain more height.

What ramp jumping looks like. This video shows a comparison between the updates but still ramp jumping nonetheless.

Now you can use this trick to your advantage and reach places that you couldn't normally reach without stairs or bounce pads.

Crouch Sliding

Crouch sliding can be useful to make sharp turns without losing speed.

When you have some speed from a strafe jump, press and hold crouch just before you hit the ground. You will notice that you slide a little bit. The tricky part is using this to keep your strafe jumping speed while making sharp turns.

Before you hit the ground and are about to start your crouch slide, let go of your direction keys. As you slide, press and hold left or right depending on your desired direction, and move your mouse in the direction you are moving.

The next step is to let go of crouch, and press jump to continue your strafe jump. Note that the closer to the ground that you press crouch to start your crouch slide, the longer you'll slide.

Here's a video tutorial of how crouch sliding is done.

Rocket Jumping

To rocket jump you need a rocket launcher.

Look straight at the floor. Now pull the trigger and jump simultaneously. You'll notice that, if you didn't blow yourself into smithereens, you'll fly quite high into the air or at the very least far higher than you could ever reach with a normal jump.

A video tutorial of how to rocket jump. The music leaves something to be desired but you can just mute it.

Rocket jumps may take some practice, and are sometimes hard to perform with lag. Practice them a bit first on your own and be sure that you can afford to lose some health. Don't be using this tactic all willy-nilly because it will make your an easier kill if your health is already low.

You can do the same thing with grenades but are quite a bit harder in terms of timing. Fire a grenade straight at the ground a few times without jumping and try to get the timing down to where you jump

Wall Climbing

Wall climbing is accomplished by using the splash damage from the Hyperblaster or Nailgun to lift yourself up along a wall.

Stand facing against a wall and look down at a slight angle with your feet. Jump as you start firing your Hyperblaster and hold the forward' key. Release the jump key as you take off. If you don't go into the air, adjust your aiming angle and make sure you aren't sliding' along the wall while holding the forward key.

Wall climbing is better achieved with the Nailgun because it has more splash damage, but it is a little bit tougher to pull off because of it's slight spin up time. While this may be cool, it's really hard to master and sometimes the payoff isn't worth it in a multiplayer game. Very situational so it's used pretty rarely.
